Mandibular canal



  • Channel for mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve and vessels.
  • Neurovascular tissue enters mandible at the mandibular foramen.
  • Runs through ramus and body of mandible from molar to incisor area.
  • Appears as a thick, linear radiolucency inferior to roots of teeth.
  • May have slightly corticated borders.
  • Often visualized in molar and premolar area; harder to see anterior of mental foramen.
  • Not visible in many cases – sometimes not a well-defined canal.
